The white grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Alablanca, Albanello Bianco, Albanello Bianco di Siracusa, Albanello di Siracusa, Arnina Bianca, Arvanella, Arvina, Claretta, Fumisi, Fumusa and Lacrima Cristi Bianca.

It was once widespread in many provinces in Sicily and is one of the oldest varieties there. In the 18th century, the sweet wines produced from sun-dried grapes were an expensive speciality.
The parentage is unknown. Due to morphological similarities, it should not be confused with the Albanella, Albaranzeuli Bianco or Greco Bianco varieties.
