The originally protected PDO area is located in the Kakheti region in eastern Georgia. It extends at an altitude of 350 to 700 metres above sea level in the middle section of the Alazani River between the Chermishhevi and Vedzirula tributaries around the municipalities of Akhasheni, Chumlaki and Zegaani. The medium sweet vinified red wine is made from the Saperavi and/or Saperavi Budeshuri varieties. It has a garnet-red colour with a velvety, fruity aroma of cherries and blackberries.
