The red grape variety originates from Greece. Synonyms are Aedano Mavro, Aïdani Noir, Aïdano Mavro, Ithani Mavro, Mavraïdano, Mayraedano and Santorini. It is believed that the variety (among many others) was used for the production of the famous Malvasia wines, which were shipped or exported from the historic Greek port of Monemvasia as early as the 13th century. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2007, it is not an independent variety, but a colour mutation of Aïdani Aspro (or vice versa). The variety is cultivated in the Cyclades, such as Santorini. No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
I have great respect for the scope and quality of the wein.plus encyclopaedia. It is a unique place to go for crisp, sound information on terms from the world of wine.
