Aïdani Mavro

The red grape variety comes from Greece. Synonyms are Aedano Mavro, Aïdani Noir, Ithani Mavro, Mavraïdano and Mayraedano. It is believed that the variety was used (among many others) to produce the famous Malvasia wines, which were shipped or exported from the historic Greek port of Monemvasia as early as the 13th century. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2007, it is not a separate variety, but a colour mutation of Aïdani Aspro (or vice versa). The variety is cultivated in the Cyclades, such as Santorini.
