The white grape variety originates from Greece. Synonyms are Agoumastos, Kalavritino Mavro, Kalavrytino Mavro, Mavro Kalavrytiko, Mavro Kalavritino (2nd main name), Psilomavro Kalavriton, Psilomavro Kalavryton, Rhodiaras, Rodiares, Rodiaris, Rouge de Zante, Rouge de Zante à Longue Queue, Zante Rouge and Zant Krasny.

The parentage is unknown. Nothing is known about a possible connection to the white variety Agoumastos Lefko. The late-maturing, vigorous vine is sensitive to botrytis, but resistant to both types of mildew. It produces ruby-red, tannin-rich red wines with aromas of cherries, spices and violets.
