Agostenga

The white grape variety probably originates from Italy. The name is derived from "Agosto" (Italian for August) and indicates the early ripening from the end of July/beginning of August. The 90 or so synonyms attest to its great age and formerly widespread distribution in Europe. Some of them are Agostana, Agostenga Bianca, Agostinga, August Grape, Bianca Capella, Blanc de Morgex, Early Green Madeira, Early White Malvasia, Green Lager, Hartig 394, Lugliatica Verde, Luglienca Bianca, Maddalena Salomon, Madeleine Alice, Madeleine Alice Salomon, Madeleine Salomon, Malvasia Belaia, Malvaziya Belaya, Petit Blanc, Prié. Prié Bianca, Prié Bianco, Prié Blanc, Uva d'Agosto and White Welsh. According to the VIVC catalogue, Agostenga (with, for example, synonym Luglienca Bianca) and Luglienga Bianca (with, for example, synonym Agostenga) are two independent varieties. The partly identical and the many similar synonyms are confusing. Presumably, the variety Prié grown in Switzerland is a variety of these. A few ancient Angostenga vines can be found in the restored Royal Vineyard in Potsdam. In 2016, however, no stocks were recorded under the name Agostenga (Kym Anderson).
