The white grape variety originates from Italy or Spain. There are around 100 synonyms, which testifies to its great age. The most important are Agostana, Agostenga (2nd main name), Bernarda, Bernarde, Bernardine, Bianca Capella, Blanc de la Salle, Blanc de Morgex, Blanc du Valdigne, Legiruela, Frühweißer Malvasier, Grüner Lager, Hartig 394, Kilkianer, Lugliatica, Lugliatica Verde, Madeleine Alice Salomon, Petit Blanc, Plant de la Salle, Prié Bianca, Prié Bianco and Prié Blanc. In the VIVC catalogue, the variety is listed under Agostenga. This name is derived from the Italian "agosto" (August) in reference to the early ripening period or from Augusta Praetoria, the Latin name of the city of Aosta. However, the name is also used for Agostina, Agostenga Rossa, Luglienga Bianca and Vermentino.
