The red grape variety originates from Greece. The origin (parentage) is unknown. It is mainly cultivated on the island of Chios in the eastern Aegean. The variety, which was threatened with extinction, was reactivated there in the 1960s. It produces powerful, fruity red wines with fine tannins and flavours of mulberries and cherries. These are usually blended with Chiotiko Krassero. No stocks were recorded in 2016 (Kym Anderson).

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
