This red grape variety comes from the island of Sicily in Italy. Synonyms are Acitana Nera and Citana Nera. Nothing is known about the ancestry (parentage) or a possible genetic relationship to the white variety Acitana. The variety is cultivated in small quantities in the two north-eastern provinces of Catania and Messina, where it is blended with other local varieties such as Nerello Cappuccio and Nerello Mascalese. Among other things, it is permitted in the DOC red wine Faro. In 2016, however, no stocks were reported (Kym Anderson statistics).
