Term for abstinence (lat. abstinere = to abstain). The term is often associated with abstaining from alcohol or meat dishes or also with sexual abstinence. Especially "abstainer" colloquially refers to a person who lives abstinently with regard to alcohol. In connection with excessive alcohol consumption, the temperance movements (abstinence) emerged in the 19th century.
